A 22-year-old St. Catharines man was charged with sexual assault after being accused of slapping a woman on the buttocks while passing her on the street.

On Monday, Niagara Regional Police received a report that a woman was at the intersection of Welland Avenue and Geneva Street — just steps from the police station — at about 1:30 p.m. when the incident occurred. Police said the complainant told them she was standing at the intersection when a man walked past, circled back and slapped her on the buttocks.

Police said the victim provided officers with a photo of the suspect, and they were able to locate him.

He has been charged with sexual assault and failing to comply with a probation order.
