A Venice man has been arrested following a nine-month investigation into a fatal overdose earlier this year.

The Venice Police Department announced Tuesday that Justin Companion, 41, was arrested Oct. 6 in connection with the death of James Harrington III, also of Venice, who died from a heroin overdose on Jan. 17.

Detectives determined that heroin distributed by Companion directly caused Harrington’s death. Companion faces charges of second-degree homicide under Florida’s Drug-Induced Homicide Law, which allows prosecutors to hold drug distributors criminally responsible when their actions lead to a fatal overdose.
