Muskegon Lake, between Lake Michigan and the city that bears its name, has been removed from a U.S. and Canadian list of most polluted sites after decades of cleanup efforts and community engagement, state officials said this month.

Officials from both Michigan and Canada announced they had "delisted" the west Michigan lake from the collaborative Areas of Concern (AOC) that tracks polluted sites throughout the Great Lakes region.

“Completing this long journey of recovery, restoration, and renewal is a tremendous community achievement that EGLE has been proud to assist,” Michigan Environment, Great Lakes and Energy Director Phil Roos. “Along with many partners, we celebrate today’s success and look forward to supporting tomorrow’s stewardship and growth.”
