HOLMES COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) –The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has confirmed a second case of a chronic wasting disease infection in a deer in Holmes County.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials say a 1.5-year-old doe, killed by a vehicle along a roadway, tested positive for the disease. It was found less than a mile from Florida's first-ever case of CWD in a deer in 2023.
Chronic Wasting Disease, sometimes referred to as the zombie deer disease, affects the animal's brain and central nervous system. There's no cure or vaccine, and it's always fatal to deer.
The FWC is conducting a comprehensive response plan to contain the disease to the area where it's been detected. While CWD is not transmitted to humans, wildlife officials strongly recommend
