Michigan denies workers’ comp to undocumented immigrants. A legal case could change that.

When Carla, an undocumented farmworker who spent a decade picking Michigan cherries, peaches, pumpkins and asparagus, was hit by a forklift, it broke her foot. Out of work for months, she tried to get workers’ compensation to cover lost wages.

But she was denied benefits because of her immigration status.
