CLEVELAND — Bionca Ellis, the woman accused of fatally stabbing 3-year-old Julian Wood and injuring his mother outside a Giant Eagle, is wrapping up day two of her trial .
Earlier this year, Ellis spent months in a mental health facility before being deemed competent to stand trial . Once that determination was made, her attorney, Fernando Mack, changed her plea to not guilty by reason of insanity.
The insanity defense focuses on Ellis’ mental state at the time of the crime, rather than her current competency. To help explain how this works, 3News spoke to Michael Benza, a professor of practice at Case Western Reserve University School of Law.
