GUILFORD, Conn. (WFSB) — Connecticut’s abnormally dry conditions are creating a dangerous combination of elevated fire risks and water shortages, forcing fire departments to respond to more brush fires while well-dependent homeowners face dwindling water supplies.
The Guilford Fire Department responded to a brush fire on Boston Post Road Sunday night, where embers from burning brush landed on a nearby building’s roof. Captain Jim Considine said the fire was caused by a discarded cigarette in a mulch bed.
“Just one little spark” is all it takes in these conditions, Considine said. “Embers were coming off the brush burning, landing on the roof of the building.”
