SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - While El Niño and La Niña are well-known weather oscillations, or “teleconnections,” another large-scale pattern called the North Atlantic Oscillation could impact Siouxland weather by the end of October.

The North Atlantic Oscillation, or NAO, has remained generally neutral since June, with only minor dips below average during the second half of July and August that brought slightly cooler temperatures to the region.

However, new forecast data (above) suggests a substantial shift may be coming. Weather models indicate the NAO index could see a large dip into negative territory during the second half of October, potentially bringing notable changes to local weather patterns.
