WASHINGTON — On Tuesday, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors held a special meeting to discuss the upcoming property tax deadline, aka the car tax. The board has decided to extend the personal property tax deadline to Wednesday, Nov. 5.
During the extension period, residents will not incur any interest or late fees. Virginia state law strictly limits the ability to waive interest and late fees. However, adjusting the due date gives the Board a workaround those laws.
This is also a way to help those residents impacted by the government shutdown. On Tuesday, the White House warned that there may not be any guaranteed back pay for federal employees during the shutdown.
