LOUISVILLE, Ky. — U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is retiring when his current term ends and the race to replace him is starting to heat up.

McConnell was the longest-serving party leader in the history of the Senate before ceding that position in February 2024. He was first elected to the Senate in 1984.

But who exactly are the people vying for the powerful Republican's seat?

Former state Attorney General Daniel Cameron was the first candidate to announce his bid for McConnell's seat. Cameron previously ran, and lost , against Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear for governor in 2023.

He was seen as a rising star in the party who worked for McConnell and pitched President Donald Trump's campaign to Black voters.
