SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Educators in South Portland are still working without a contract, and negotiations appear to have stalled over several key issues.

The school board met again Monday night. Dozens of teachers wearing red shirts as a sign of solidarity packed the room, just as they did in March when contract talks began.

The South Portland Teachers Association and the school board agree that about 90 percent of the new contract terms have been settled, but consensus over the remaining 10 percent has proven to be the most difficult to achieve.

“Truly, it has been disheartening and shocking,” Sarah Gay, president of the association, said.

Agreement has already been reached on salary and insurance, which often are two of the biggest hurdles.
