AGUILAR, Colo. (KREX) — On Tuesday, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), with the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Office of Inspector General and the Las Animas County Sheriff's Office, announced that a former Town Administrator is facing multiple felony charges for the misuse of public funds.
Tyra Marie Avila, 47, who served as the Aguilar Town Administrator, Clerk, and Treasurer for 17 years before her resignation in September 2024, allegedly diverted over $26,000 in public funds to her personal bank account. During an investigation, officials found that money from federal loans and grants designated for the town's Augmentation Reservoir project had been mixed with the town's general fund.
