DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) - The first Libertarian elected to a partisan office in Iowa is putting in a bid for U.S. Senate.
Thomas Laehn, Greene County Attorney, is launching his campaign for U.S. Senate this week.
Laehn says he is running to “restore the political power to the citizens of Iowa and the nation,” according to his campaign website .
“I am running against the two-party system itself,” Laehn said. “It is time to take political power away from the two major parties and to restore it to the people.”
The U.S. Senate race in Iowa has opened up as Republican Senator Joni Ernst does not plan to run for reelection in 2026.
As Greene County Attorney, Leahn says he created new rehabilitation opportunities for nonviolent offenders, which reduced recidivism rates.
