HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Lawmakers in Hartford Tuesday announced new proposals aimed at weeding out potentially phony nonprofits in Connecticut.
House and Senate Republicans said there has been a culture of corruption in state government for years. They're trying to increase transparency in nonprofit funding and prevent abuse of taxpayer dollars as a federal probe examines ties between lawmakers, state agencies and community organizations.
"I want people watching this to be like, 'I can't believe this is happening. I can't believe lawmakers in both parties are being asked to vote on earmarks and free money effectively from taxpayers in Connecticut when we're not even privvy to who these organizations are, whether they're legitimate,'" State Sen. Rob Sampson (R) said.
