Strasburg officials are confronting a major budget shortfall this fiscal year, a challenge that has forced the town to re-evaluate its spending priorities.

The shortfall stems largely from the unexpected closure of the Valley Milk plant and a slowdown in development-related availability fees, both of which have sharply reduced anticipated revenue for the town’s sewer fund.

“We have a little bit of a revenue issue,” Town Manager Waverly Coggsdale said.

At Monday’s Town Council work session, staff presented a breakdown of the losses. The Valley Milk closure alone is projected to cut sewer-fund revenue by about $354,000, with total utility losses estimated at more than $420,000.
