PORTLAND, Maine — Portland's city council unanimously approved the city's plan for a new emergency warming shelter.

MaineHousing recently awarded the city a $400,303 grant to fund the project.

The emergency shelter will be inside the same building that is a shelter for asylum seekers on Riverside Industrial Parkway, which is about 5 miles from downtown Portland.

The shelter will offer 60 beds on nights when temperatures reach 15 degrees or if more than 10 inches of snow falls. It will be open from 7:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. and offer people access to showers, bathrooms, food, and other resources.

The city said having a location off-peninsula is not preferred, but they will have a shuttle that runs to and from the shelter.
