LONGMONT — It was last fall, and Mead senior Howie Thompson hadn’t yet recovered from the ACL injury he’d suffered in football the previous year.

Instead of just sitting out, Thompson, on an idea idea given to him by his father, decided to go out for the school’s golf team. He couldn’t handle the physicality of football with his injury but, hey, he could still swing a club.

“I went out and made the team — barely,” he chuckled while he took in the moment after helping lead Mead to the Class 4A golf title on Tuesday. “But I kept working and I missed (making state) by like two strokes. But here we are now, and we just won a state championship.”
