CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Steele Creek family is heartbroken and searching for answers after their 76-year-old father, a Vietnam War veteran, was struck and killed while crossing a busy intersection in his motorized wheelchair on Monday morning.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say the crash happened just after 8 a.m. at the intersection of Shopton Road West and Caden Road, near the Harris Teeter shopping center. The driver stayed on scene and is cooperating with investigators.
Loved ones say Hanh Hoang made regular trips to the shopping center.
“He was very sweet, kind, and had a really big smile,” said his daughter, Jenny. “It was just so sudden. Every time I look at his picture, I just can’t stop crying.”
