B.C.’s NDP government is introducing legislation to open up the possibility of adding childcare spaces on school grounds.

If passed, schools could be hosts to daycares for infants and toddlers – and before-and-after daycare on school grounds could be expanded to cover Christmas and summer breaks.

“Today [is] what I hope will be life-changing for many parents,” said B.C. Premier David Eby at a press conference Tuesday.

In B.C., new parents face significant waitlists, high costs, staffing shortages and a two-tiered system where only a small portion of families access a $10/day program.

Tuesday’s announcement gives advocates hope that the momentum or the government delivering on its childcare commitments is changing.
