Over 21 kilometres, at some point, you leave your comfort zone.

For Victoria’s Adam Trimm, that moment is inevitable in a half marathon. But this year he’s pushing through the pain for someone who doesn’t get the same choice.

“I have a friend and coworker diagnosed with ALS last year,” Trimm said.

That friend is Derek Breen. The two have worked side by side for years — literally, their desks are right next to each other — at Mac Reno Design Build in Saanich, a local construction company.

Early last year, Derek began to notice his speech changing. When the diagnosis came in June, it hit hard: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis — ALS. The same condition that keeps the mind sharp while the body slowly, inevitably loses strength.
