WATFORD CITY, N.D. (KUMV) - Submarine duty was once called the most dangerous assignment in World War II. But one man from Watford City not only survived it, he’s made it to 100 years old.
At 100 years old, George Hayden still does his own laundry, mows his lawn and tinkers around in his shop.
“I’ve always lived under that theory: if you don’t use it, you’re gonna lose it. And well, I didn’t want to lose it, so I have been staying busy, always doing something,” said Hayden.
Raised on a farm near Williston, he grew up in the shadow of his father’s World War I service. That led him to enlist early.
“Dad told me when I got eligible to be drafted, to volunteer, so you had a chance to pick the Department of the Service. So I chose the Navy,” explained Hayden.
