Celebrated Portland chef Justin Woodward, who helmed the kitchen at fine-dining restaurant Castagna , died on Oct. 2 in San Diego. He was 43.
Woodward was born in Boston and raised in Southern California, according to his online obituary . He studied culinary arts at the Art Institute of San Diego and worked as a chef in restaurants in Portland, New York and Europe.
He landed in Portland in 2011 as sous chef at Castagna under chef Matthew Lightner. In an interview , he said he was interested in coming to Portland and Castagna as a way to continue to explore new cities.
He was named executive chef soon after arriving when Lightner moved on to Atera in New Y
