SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Springfield-Greene County Park Board is honoring the legacy of former director Dan Kinney, who significantly expanded the city's park system over nearly three decades.

During his tenure, Kinney increased the number of parks and facilities from 33 to 88, transforming the local parks landscape.

"He just had such a vision for what the Parks Department could be and then became," said Jenny Edwards, Public Information Administrator at Springfield-Greene County Park Board.

Under Kinney's leadership, the park board transitioned to the Springfield-Greene County Park Board to expand its scope.

The first countywide park sales tax was passed during his tenure, which helped fund many of the improvements and grew the department's annual budget from $857,000 in 1971 to $25 mil
