Furious locals upset over a proposal to run tours on a tranquil NSW lake have clashed with a jet ski hire operator in bizarre scenes after he interrupted their protest to defend himself.

Play Hard Jet Ski Hire has lodged an application with the NSW government to operate guided jet ski tours on Lake Illawarra, sparking anger from residents concerned about noise and disruption to the lake's wildlife.

It comes after his proposal to run the business on Port Botany in Sydney was knocked back by authorities on the grounds that it would be too dangerous, according to ‘A Current Affair’.

Footage aired by the Channel Nine program showed the business owner Malcolm Barry attending a protest led those opposed to his plan, where one demonstrator told him “you’re off the planet”.
