October is breast cancer awareness month and while mortality rates have decreased, doctors and survivors said it’s still important to get checked, especially for women in their 30s and 40s.

“We tend to see that in those younger patients, the cancer seems to be more aggressive and less sensitive to treatment," said Dr. Valerie Brutus, the director of breast surgery for the Fairfield region at the Hartford Healthcare Cancer Institute.

She recommends patients who are 25 years old get a breast assessment, a conversation with your provider about your risk factor that examines personal medical history, family history, biopsies and ways to take better care of yourself.
