Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt has officially declared an environmental emergency in Caddo County after a significant saltwater purge contaminated Five Mile Creek near Eakly, killing dozens of cattle and wildlife in the area.
The declaration comes in response to a September 24 letter from the Oklahoma Corporation Commission (OCC) detailing a saltwater discharge from the ground near a suspected saltwater disposal well site.
“It’s Still Coming Out of the Ground”
Local farmer Mike Loula has been living the consequences of the saltwater leak firsthand. The contaminated water flowed into Five Mile Creek, a watering hole for his herd, killing 26 cows and three calves. Loula, who has been raising cattle on the land since 1983, watched helplessly as many of his animals took their final breaths.“
