The main piece of a massive expansion project at St. Mary’s Hospital is moving forward.

Bon Secours held a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday for a new 8-story, $306 million critical care tower planned at the hospital off Monument Avenue in the West End.

The 200,000-square-foot building is slated to rise on the patient drop-off area and parking lot at the hospital’s main entrance that fronts Bremo Road.

The tower, which is anticipated to open in early 2028, is intended to modernize the hospital’s critical care operations. It will feature operating rooms and other facilities alongside dozens of beds, and comes as part of an overall $370 million project at St. Mary’s that includes renovations at the hospital and other work.
