Nagpur: The devastating fire at Jaipur's Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital that killed eight patients admitted to ICU has turned the spotlight on fire safety lapses in hospitals across the country. In Nagpur, the situation is equally alarming, with data from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation's (NMC) fire and emergency services department exposing a widespread disregard for statutory norms.
According to official records maintained by NMC's fire and emergency services department till August 31, 2025, nearly 228 hospitals in the city are operating either without fire safety clearance or on temporary approvals. Around 150 hospitals are running without any mandatory NOC. Also, 132 hospitals in the city have been declared unsafe.
