Rangers legend Ally McCoist believes there could be financial issues that may prevent Steven Gerrard returning to Ibrox.

talkSPORT understands that Gerrard is a leading contender to replace Russell Martin and return to his former club.

That is if the Liverpool icon wants to return to Rangers, where he won the Scottish Premiership in 2020/21, as he rejected the club’s advances this summer before Martin was hired .

However, there is believed to be significant complexities to any move that McCoist believes could put a spanner in the works.

It has been reported that Gerrard is still based in Bahrain despite leaving Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq in January.

There could also be tax issues that may have delayed his return to the dugout.
