Grimsley volleyball coach Stacy Way says senior Sam Cavanaugh was destined to be a 6-foot outside hitter, but because she’s only 5-foot-4, the aggressive yet level-headed player would be at her best setting the tone in a different way.

Cavanaugh moved from setter to defensive specialist as a sophomore and has been a starter for two regular-season conference champions with the hope of winning a third by the end of this week.

Grimsley (21-8, 10-0) leads the Metro 6A/7A Conference prior to a league match against sixth-place Dudley on Tuesday and a final conference match on Thursday against last-place Smith.
