HOUSTON (CW39) — Another truck slammed into the Houston Avenue Bridge Sunday Oct. 5th— marking the 72nd time it’s been struck this year, according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

TxDOT officials said the ongoing problem happens because many semi-trucks and oversized loads are either operating without the required state permits or ignoring approved travel routes to take shortcuts.

In a statement to CW39, TxDOT said:

“The monitoring system has detected 72 strikes to date in 2025. There have only been eight reported that were investigated by police. Unfortunately, many semi-trucks and oversized loads are either operating without the necessary permits that designate approved travel routes or are deliberately ignoring those routes in favor of shortcuts.
