Cruelty to animals is barred by law and a punishable offence but who cares for the legal provision in the Sepahijala wildlife sanctuary ? Gross irregularities in supply of food for the captive animals in the sanctuary in collaboration with corrupt zoo officials has now started taking its toll on animal lives. The latest instance is the death of a clouded leopard from anemia caused by lack of adequate food, as per sources in the wildlife sanctuary.

The clouded leopard is almost an extinct species in the world and found only in northeaster region of the country of which the Sepahijala wildlife sanctuary in Tripura is a part. Yesterday a clouded leopard, an endangered species breathed its last in the sanctuary and it was later discovered after post-mortem that it had died from chronic anemia
