An arrest has been made in connection with the Palisades Fire, according to multiple law enforcement sources. A formal announcement is expected from the United States Attorney's Office on Wednesday morning.
Details about the individual in custody and the specific charges have not been disclosed. Sources could not confirm if the arrest pertains to a young man who was previously investigated in relation to the fire earlier this year.
The Palisades Fire ignited on January 7 in the Palisades Highlands. This occurred just a week after a smaller brushfire was reported in the same area, which neighbors attributed to fireworks set off during New Year’s celebrations. The Los Angeles City Fire Department has not released records or information regarding the cause of the New Year’s fire. However, officials and sources indicated that agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and local fire investigators were examining whether embers from the earlier fire could have reignited due to strong winds on January 7.
If this theory is accurate, it could imply that the individual who set off the fireworks may bear responsibility for the Palisades Fire. Sources noted that this young man had access to a specific area in the Palisades Highlands during the New Year’s celebrations and was suspected of igniting some of the fireworks.
Earlier this year, he was reportedly under close surveillance by law enforcement. At one point, he was stopped and questioned by agents and detectives but was subsequently allowed to leave.
In their investigation, the ATF conducted several controlled burns near the fire's origin to assess the detection capabilities of smoke and flames using wilderness cameras and other remote sensors. Experts from the ATF have also been evaluating whether embers or unextinguished materials from the New Year’s fire could have reignited the following week. The results of these tests have not been made public.
