Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has revealed that he had a close encounter with a great white shark while filming his National Geographic series Uncharted in Tasmania .

Ramsay was fishing for prized spiny lobster when the chance encounter occurred.

“I’m on aerated tanks from the boat,” he said, “and it’s the first time I’d spotted a great white shark, and I just stayed calm, I had my hand on the spiny lobster, and I thought [now that] I’ve got the prized asset, am I about to be eaten by a great white?”

Ramsay admitted he lay down in the kelp and “waited for this 12 or 14-foot great white shark pass.”

The revelations come as Ramsay praised Australia’s food and wine industry in a video for Condé Nast Traveller.
