A popular Midea air conditioner became a mold-contaminated health hazard that caused lasting respiratory issues, according to a lawsuit filed in federal court by two customers.

Midea and Lowe’s sold air conditioners with a defect that allowed water to pool inside the unit, leading to mold growth and airborne contamination, the lawsuit filed Oct. 3 in U.S. District Court in New Jersey.

The customers who filed the lawsuit, both Kansas City, Missouri residents, allege the companies failed to properly test the product, warn consumers of the health risks, or offer safer designs.

The lawsuit was filed in New Jersey, the location of Midea’s headquarters in the U.S.
