A former New Jersey attorney who was disbarred three years ago has been charged with theft and unauthorized practice of law, authorities said.
David T. Schlendorf accepted $10,000 in March to represent a Toms River man, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said.
Schlendorf, 54, misrepresented himself as a licensed attorney despite being disbarred in New Jersey in December 2022, prosecutors allege.
Now a resident of Holladay, Utah, Schlendorf turned himself in on Tuesday and was sent to the Ocean County jail ahead of a detention hearing
He remains held Wednesday afternoon, according to the jail website.
Attorney information wasn’t immediately available. No date has been set for his detention hearing yet, the prosecutor’s office said.
