As an immigration activist, I sat with others during the recent second trial and sentencing of Doris Aleman-Bonilla, the Fulton woman who was arrested for illegal reentry into the United States.

Before attending the trial, I read the Aug. 5, 2025, article by reporter Michelle Breidenbach, which discussed Aleman-Bonilla’s first trial ( “A Syracuse immigration drama: Jurors agonize over the truth, the law and a desperate mother” ). This article provided a good foundation for understanding not only the reason for the prosecution but also the fascinating and gruesome explanation of why Aleman-Bonilla came to the United States in the first place.
