Students and families in Fort Worth took steps — literally — toward safer streets on Wednesday morning.

The city’s Transportation and Public Works Department marked National Walk to School Day at A.V. Cato Elementary School in west Fort Worth.

The event brought together students, parents, teachers, and city leaders to promote safe walking routes and community awareness around pedestrian safety. A.V. Cato Elementary is one of several Safe Routes to School project sites where the city is adding new sidewalks, curb ramps, and signage to make walking to school safer and more accessible.

Rashad Jackson, School Pedestrian Safety Program Manager for the City of Fort Worth, said the effort starts with education and awareness in neighborhoods.
