When Lizbeth and Christian Moreno sent their five-year-old nonverbal, autistic daughter off to school on Oct. 1, they never expected this call from the principal: "I just want to let you know she eloped, but I have her in the car and we’re on the way to school now," Lizbeth recalled.

Lizbeth said it took her a second to process the information.

“At the beginning, I was like, ‘Okay, okay.’ But then I was like, ‘Wait, wait, wait, wait—what do you mean, eloped? What do you mean by that? What do you mean when you’re telling me she eloped and she’s in your car?” she said.
