Barrington Middle School teacher Lori Dalessio tells a story to her class at the start of each school year. She calls it “Move the candy,” and it is not about grammar or history or any other subject. It is bigger than that.

This is how it goes: “In 1985 I had my very first job, at Garden City Cinema, as a popcorn girl,” Dalessio said. “One of the first things my boss asked me to do is clean out the candy drawer.”

So she grabbed a spray bottle and a rag and went to the candy case and took all the candy out of it. She sprayed down the shelves, wiped them clean, dusted off the candy boxes and put them back in the case. A while later the boss approached her.

“I was nervous, thought I was in trouble,” she said. “He said, ‘Did you move the candy? Take it out of the case and
