New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani began his statement by describing Hamas’s attack on Oct. 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of more than 1,200 people and the abduction of more than 250, as a “horrific war crime.” He then condemned Israeli’s actions in the ensuing war, as well as the U.S.’s involvement. Israel’s foreign ministry called the statement "shameful."
