Motorists are at risk of a £1,000 fine for a common driving practice that breaks Highway Code rules . Motorists, road users and drivers have been warned over attempting to bypass traffic queues at roundabouts.
The controversial technique, known as "slingshotting" , has sparked warnings from road experts. Rule 184 of the Highway Code states: "On approaching a roundabout, take notice and act on all the information available to you, including traffic signs, traffic lights and lane markings which direct you into the correct lane.
"You should use Mirrors - Signal - Manoeuvre at all stages and decide as early as possible which exit you need to take. Time your signals so as not to confuse other road users and get into the correct lane, adjust your speed and position to fit in wit
