KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Deputies are warning the public of online scammers after a Clay County man lost six figures in a romance scam that lasted nearly seven months.
According to a Facebook post from the Clay County Sheriff's Office, since March of this year, a local man has lost an estimated $120,000 to an individual claiming to be a woman named "Lisa."
Lisa reportedly initiated a conversation with the man via TikTok seven months ago. She eventually asked the man to move the conversation to the Telegram app -- an encrypted messaging app that the sheriff's office says makes it harder for law enforcement to access and track conversations with scammers.
