TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Tampa Police Department has released body camera video showing the moments leading up to the death of a man who was hit by a car after being tased while running from officers in downtown Tampa.

Police identified the man as 35-year-old Zachary Groff.

According to Tampa police Chief Lee Bercaw, the incident began around 1 p.m. Tuesday with a car burglary.

“The owner called to report someone sitting in the front seat of his car," Bercaw said. "The suspect left carrying a bag and a skateboard. The owner realized his backpack was missing, which contained a loaded 9mm."

Officers put out a BOLO for the suspect. Later that night, around 8 p.m., officers on patrol saw a man matching the description near North Ashley Drive and East Whiting Street, according to Bercaw.
