SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — At Angelo State University football games, fans do not just hear cheers after every score; they hear a cannon blast echo across LeGrand Stadium.

The shot is fired from a replica 19th-century cannon by members of the Fort Concho Living History group. The tradition has been part of ASU's game day atmosphere for more than a decade.

"As far as I know, this goes back at least 15 years," said Sarah Thieme, the Fort Concho Education Coordinator. "Angelo State is one of only three colleges in Texas that still fires artillery at games."

The cannon fires concussive blanks. The volunteers prepare the blasting material themselves and follow strict safety procedures to ensure no one is near the firing area.
