WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — A Woonsocket man has been sentenced to 10 years behind bars for his role in a 2023 shooting that injured a 13-year-old boy.

According to court documents, Gerald Ware pleaded guilty to charges of felony assault, carrying a pistol without a license and possession of a prohibited firearm by a person convicted of violence. In exchange, prosecutors dropped the charges Ware was facing of discharging a firearm.

In April 2023, Ware was arrested after a shootout in the area of Cumberland and Locust streets.

Police said Ware and a second suspect, who managed to evade police, were exchanging gunfire in broad daylight when a 13-year-old boy inside a vehicle driving by at the time of the incident was struck in the arm by either a bullet or broken glass.
