FARGO — With harvest season in full swing, NDSU Extension officials are reminding drivers to share the road and stay alert, especially in rural areas.
As combines, tractors, and grain carts move between fields, drivers should expect to see more large, slow-moving equipment on roads that are typically quiet, said Angie Johnson, NDSU Extension farm and ranch safety specialist.
“These types of equipment only drive 15, 20, 25 miles an hour at tops,” Johnson said. “And so when you approach that farm equipment going 65 miles an hour or higher, you can quickly get into a crash situation by rear-ending them.”
Johnson said many crashes happen when drivers underestimate how slowly farm equipment moves or try to pass when it’s unsafe.
