EUGENE, Ore. - The Eugene City Council has decided to pause the use of Flock Safety cameras, postponing discussions on their future use to a later date.
Eugene Police Chief Chris Skinner provided insight into what these cameras capture and how their use in Eugene differs from other areas in the nation.
"I think the thing to point out here is that we have opted out of the nationwide data sharing network, which means that no entity outside of Oregon can access EPD's image database," said Skinner.
Skinner also clarified that the cameras only take still photographs, not video, capturing the back part of a vehicle, along with its location, date, and time. They are triggered only by objects as large as vehicles, not pedestrians.
Despite this, city councilors expressed distrust in Flock Safet
