A rifle club captain accused of shooting his friend in a tragic hunting "accident" has been left "devastated", insisting the fatal bullet ricocheted off the ground.

John Andrew Butcher, 63, was charged with manslaughter after a 71-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound at a Cassilis property on October 8.

On October 9, he was granted bail in what his defence lawyer described as an "exceptional case".

Paramedics were called to the Upper Hunter property and declared the 71-year-old man dead.
