HONOLULU (Island News) -- The number of assaults on police officers has gone up on Oʻahu — with Honolulu police reporting a 20% increase this year compared to 2024.
Within 30 days, several attacks on officers were reported, including suspects allegedly biting an officer, using a guitar to attack another and assaulting three officers in one incident. Officials said it’s part of a troubling trend the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) has been tracking all year.
“From January through October 2025 verse, 2024 during the same time period, 2025 we seen a 20% increase in officer assaults,” said Acting Assistant Chief Brenden Ogata of HPD.
This isn’t just physically hurting the men and women who patrol our streets, it’s also damaging an institution that’s already struggling to fill vacancies.
